Rose Gulkand is the traditional rose-petal preserve of Mewar, made in the Haldighati valley from Damask rose petals and mishri — and nothing else. There is no added colour, no essence and no preservative: the colour and scent are the petals’ own, which is why the shade varies a little from batch to batch. Eat a teaspoon on its own after a meal, stir it into warm or cold milk, fold it through curd or shrikhand, or use it as the sweet layer in a meetha paan. Each 500 g jar is packed in the valley and delivered anywhere in India for a flat ₹39. Store it in a cool, dark place with the lid tight and use a clean, dry spoon — it does not need the fridge.

What is gulkand made of?

Two ingredients: rose petals and mishri (unrefined rock sugar). No added colour, no essence and no preservative — the colour and scent are the petals’ own.

Does it contain sodium benzoate or any other preservative?

No. There is no sodium benzoate and no other preservative — it keeps because of the sugar (mishri), which is why it should be stored tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

How do you eat gulkand?

A teaspoon on its own after a meal, stirred into warm or cold milk, folded through curd or shrikhand, spread on toast, or as the sweet layer in a meetha paan.

How much gulkand should I have?

It is concentrated — most people take a teaspoon or two at a time.

Why does the colour change from batch to batch?

Because nothing is added to fix it. The shade comes from the petals of that season, so it varies a little from one batch to the next.

Does it need to go in the fridge?

No. Store the jar in a cool, dark place, away from direct sun, before and after opening.

How long does it keep?

Twelve months from the packing date printed on the jar, unopened. Once open, keep it tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
