What is paan sharbat (pan sharbat), and how to serve it
Paan sharbat (pan sharbat) is betel-leaf syrup you dilute into a cold drink. No supari, no tobacco. How to serve it with water, soda or milk, and when.
The short answer
Paan sharbat, also written pan sharbat, is a sweet concentrate that tastes of meetha paan, made to be diluted into cold water, soda or milk. Ours is paan (betel leaf) extract and mishri syrup only: there is no supari (areca nut) and no tobacco in it. About 50 ml in 200 ml of chilled water, soda or milk makes a glass.
What is in a paan sharbat
The flavour comes from the betel leaf: green, peppery and fresh, the base taste of every paan. In our Paan Sharbat (350 ml) that is the paan extract, sweetened with mishri syrup. Nothing else: no added colour, no added essence, no preservative. So it is not bright green the way some paan drinks are; that colour, where you see it, is added. If you want to know what else goes into a meetha paan and why it tastes the way it does, that is covered in Paan, explained.
No supari, no tobacco
This is the question people ask most. The word paan covers both the sweet, after-dinner meetha paan and preparations made with areca nut or tobacco. Paan sharbat is the drink version of the sweet kind only. Ours contains betel leaf extract and mishri, and no supari or tobacco of any kind.
How to serve it
• With water: 50 ml of paan sharbat in 200 ml of chilled water, with ice. The everyday version.
• With soda: the same amount with chilled soda and a squeeze of lime, for a fizzy cooler.
• With milk: stirred into very cold milk, or blended with milk and a scoop of vanilla ice cream into a paan shake. Paan shake recipe
Start with 30 ml and adjust; it is a concentrate, and it is easy to make it too sweet.
When people drink it
It fits the same moments as a paan does: after a big lunch or dinner, at weddings and parties, and through the summer as something cold and different from the usual lemonade. It is a good drink to offer guests who do not chew paan but like the taste, and a jug made with soda goes quickly at a party. A teaspoon of gulkand in a paan shake adds the rose note of a stall paan.
A note on sugar and storage
Paan sharbat is a sugar syrup, so treat it as a sweet drink; people with diabetes should ask their doctor. Keep the bottle in a cool, dark place with the cap tight. It does not need the fridge.
