Khamnor and Haldighati rose sharbat (gulab sharbat)
Khamnor gulab sharbat and Haldighati rose sharbat: what the area near the pass is known for, clear vs red sharbat, and how to order without travelling.
The short answer
Khamnor is the town beside the Haldighati pass in Rajsamand district, about 40 km north of Udaipur, and the area around it is known for rose products made from the Chaitri rose: gulab sharbat, gulkand and rose water. If you are searching for Khamnor or Haldighati rose sharbat, you are looking for a rose syrup made from the valley’s Damask roses. You can order ours online with delivery anywhere in India.
Khamnor and the Haldighati road
Haldighati is a mountain pass in the Aravalli hills of Mewar, best known as the site of the battle of 1576. Khamnor is the nearest town, and the road through it is the one most visitors take to the pass, the Chetak memorial and on towards Nathdwara. The Chaitri rose, Chaitri Gulab, is grown in the fields around here and flowers for a few weeks in Chaitra, around March and April. That short season is why rose sharbat and gulkand, which keep for months, are what the area is known for. What is Haldighati? · The Chaitri rose
What gulab sharbat traditionally is
Gulab sharbat is a concentrate, not a ready drink. It is a sweet syrup carrying the scent of the rose, made to be poured into cold water, soda or milk in the hot months. In a home or a small shop it was made from rose and sugar or mishri, and nothing else. A glass is roughly 50 ml of sharbat to 200 ml of chilled water, soda or milk. Five ways to serve rose sharbat
Clear or red: what the colour tells you
Most people picture rose sharbat as bright red or pink. Rose water and mishri do not produce that colour on their own; a vivid red or pink almost always means colour has been added, and it should be declared on the label. A sharbat made from rose water and mishri syrup alone is clear. Neither is wrong to drink, but they are different products, and the label is where you find out which one you are holding.
Our Haldighati rose sharbat
Our Clear Rose Sharbat (350 ml) is rose water and mishri syrup. It is clear, not pink, because no colour is added, and there is no added essence or preservative either. Keep it in a cool, dark place with the cap tight; it does not need the fridge. The same valley’s roses go into our gulkand and rose water.
